Circular Design - 20 West Shore Road
20 West Shore Road is a 1980s warehouse in north Edinburgh. Leased to an Arts Charity, £1.9m in grant funding was awarded to subdivide it into smaller units to let to social enterprises, charities, and artists.
As part of a range of project services provided during the project we worked with the rest of the design team to develop a range of low embodied carbon wall build-ups.
We calculated that a straw bale wall would sequester c.8 tCO2e for the lifetime of the building, the only option which was net carbon negative. This required work to meet the Building Regulations, which liaison with a fire engineer helped to overcome. We believe this to be the only commercial use of straw bale construction in Scotland. the wall was designed to be easily deconstructed for future re-use.
The project team which made this happen included Truebuild Trade Services, Wardell Armstrong, OFR Fire Engineers.
