Dance Base is Scotland’s centre for dance. It owns and occupies an award winning building in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket, built in 2001. Dance Base approached EALA initially looking for advice on energy efficiency following the energy price rises in 2021. Their brief to us included a requires to map all analysis against the green Theatre Book, which we did. We started with a survey and Building Passport, which revealed many elements of the external envelope approaching the end of life, or need of overhaul. This presented the opportunity to increase insulation whilst renewing these elements, and making the most of fairly invasive but unavoidable work. EALA subsequently carried out an feasibility study into the different ways of improving the external fabric, which included budget costing by Thomson Gray and whole life carbon assessment of the options. EALA also helped Dance Base to commission a review of the heating plant which was carried out by Luths Services.
